In I Kings 3, God said to Solomon, "Ask for whatever you want me to give you."
A common remembrance of this story has Solomon asking for wisdom. The NIV says Solomon’s response was “give your servant a discerning heart…” (I Kings 3:9). A literal translation has Solomon asking for a “hearing heart”. The Hebrew word “hearing” comes from the root SHEMA, which is recognized as the beginning of the great Jewish confession of faith which says "Hear, (SHEMA) O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one!" Wisdom, a discerning heart, is a listening heart – a heart that listens to God, and listens to the council of the Godly who surround it.
